Nikon Z6 Review – A Complete Photography Pack

After a long wait, Nikon finally started its journey in the field of full-frame mirrorless cameras.

They surprised everyone by launching Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6, both of which used Nikons latest Z-mount system.

Z7 was the first to get released, and it has a very high resolution with 45.7 MP image sensor. Whereas, Nikon Z6 with only 24.5 MP.

Even though Z7 has more excellent image quality, Z6 was considered to be an all-rounder.

It is so because of the outstanding features of Z6 like more shooting speed, lower price along with more exceptional video quality and specs.

Nikon Z6 will definitely meet your expectations. It is a look-alike of Z7 because of the identical design and button placements in the perfect place.

These two models will feel just like any other Nikons camera which is a positive point for the fans of Nikon. Let’s keep Z7 aside and discuss only Nikon Z6 review.

Features

The Nikon Z6 comes with an excellent feature of weather sealing that protects the device from water and dust.

The weather-sealed body with a deep grip design of Nikon Z6 makes it easy to use in heavy rain, near a waterfall or on a windy day.

Photo sharing is not a big problem with Z6 as it has Bluetooth and a built-in WiFi facility that helps to transfer pictures or videos instantly to a hard disk or another device.

Unfortunately, neither Nikon Z6 nor Nikon Z7 has a built-in GPS. However, to make it easy to use for vloggers and independent video creators, Nikon has made the LCD screen tiltable.

The touch-sensitive display helps you to select and change different modes or settings more easily.

Battery

You might know that batteries drain quickly in mirrorless cameras as compared with DSLRs.

The reason is simple, mirrorless cameras are lightweight, and a bigger battery cannot be adjusted in the camera.

Also, these types of cameras have to power the LCD along with an electronic viewfinder to make it work.

The same is for Nikon Z6 cameras which have a battery life (CIPA) of only 310 shots, as per the manufacturers.

Picture Quality

While the sensor resolution of Nikon Z6 is less than the Z7 model, it is still really good at taking images.

Having less megapixel is also an advantage as it results in smaller file size and quick buffering.

The hybrid autofocus system with the focus points of 273 allows the photographer to focus a subject in a frame automatically.

So they’re beneficial in sports and wildlife photography. It also includes tools like eye-detection AF and animal detection AF.

All these combined with Expeed 6 image processor, these cameras can take detailed pictures in HD quality with extreme sharpness and colour rendition.

This next-generation mirrorless camera is useful in many aspects. One of the essential specialities of this device is that it can reduce noises very efficiently.

This can be achieved due to the low-pass filter, which is adjusted in the camera. Apart from the 24.5 MP sensor resolution, the sensor size of 35mm helps to increase the image quality.

It also provides 12 FPS of continuous shooting speed. The native ISO sensitivity of Z6 ranges from 100 – 51,200 which can be an essential feature for you to take pictures in extremely low lights.

However, photographs captured at a higher ISO rate can increase noises/grains and make your final image look dull.

Like I mentioned in the Camera Buying Guide, mirrorless cameras (in this case Nikon Z6) are great at taking pictures in silence. Which means you can take candid pictures more often.

In addition to that, the electronic viewfinder with 0.8x magnification let you see how the final image will exactly look after adding white balance, depth of field and many effects.

Video Quality

In case of maximum video resolution, the Z6 is the same as it’s sibling Z7. Both of them can take extremely good 4k videos at up to 30p, slow-motion Full Hd videos at up to 120p and time-lapse at 6k.

Just like still pictures, they can produce crisp and clear videos with excellent colour rendering and autofocus feature.

These cameras also use different exposure settings for both photos and video with different i-menus for each of them.

There are few downsides like the time limit of only 29:59 minutes for shooting a video.

The in-built image stabilization is not quite good as it is while taking pictures.

However, it’s still one of the best mirrorless cameras to take HD videos with various modes.

Body Stabilization

While trying to take a picture without a tripod, you may sometimes shake the camera, and this is caused mainly when pressing the shutter button or when someone slightly pushes you. That may result in blurry images.

So to overcome this issue, the Nikon Z6 is fit with an in-body five-axis image stabilization system. The leading role of this system is to reduce body vibration and allow the photographer to take steady pictures without blurring the object.

This is also said to provide the 5 EV of exposure compensation which has the potential to change the shutter speed.

Pros

  • Low light performance
  • Budget-friendly
  • Shoots 4k and slow-mo videos

This is just a beginning, and hopefully, Nikon will create more advanced mirrorless cameras in the future.
